However, according to data from the Labor Statistics Office, the number of employed people is slowly increasing. In February 2015, around 51,996 people with a college degree over the age of 25 were employed. A year later, this number rose to 53,112.

• Act as a consultant or freelancer. Do you have the skills but can’t find a full-time job? Temporary jobs allow you to gain more experience and lead to full-time employment. According to Ellen’s 2011 survey, many millennials want to work for themselves, 54 percent of them dream of starting their own business or already own one. If you’re already paying off student loans, this can be tricky, so do your research before you quit your day job.

PSEO does this by linking university transcript data with the Bureau’s Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) records. These records list the work histories of those working through unemployment insurance, which are then linked to information on occupation and employer location.
The Labor Market Is Hot, But Not For New College Grads
“Until now, individual states have only been able to measure the earnings and employment outcomes of individuals who worked in the same state where they studied,” said John Abbott, the bureau’s senior scientist and associate director of research and methodology.
“Thanks to this experiment,” he said, “states, universities and prospective students will have the opportunity to see employment outcomes by region and industry through the program of study.”
PSEO statistics currently include data from the University of Texas System, the Colorado Department of Higher Education, the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
UT-Austin, for example, sees most students stay in-state, while University of Michigan graduates are spread over a wider geographic area.

It is clear that communication graduates are more likely to find work in the professional services, information and retail industries, while social science graduates are more likely to find work in education and healthcare.
The figure below measures the proportion of healthcare graduates who enter healthcare one year after graduation.
Surprisingly, those with a master’s degree in healthcare are less likely to work in the healthcare industry than those with short-term certificates and university degrees.
